Resources for Windows Vista testers

I’m guessing a significant number of people who visit this site regularly are going to be testing Windows Vista. That number should shoot way up in a few months when the public beta is available.

So, for all of us brave souls, I’ll be collecting resources to drivers, support files, and the like. I’ll try to keep this post updated, and if it gets big enough I’ll move it to its own page.

  1. Great resource Ed. Three questions.

It seems like Microsoft’s anti spyware endlessly asks me for approval for things. I believe that for security purposes we are going to be asked for approvals much more often and forced to click through to progress. I’ve just started playing with Vista so forgive my ignorance, but is there a way to exempt certain applications from the need to ask for approval. For instance. I’m pretty sure that I can trust anything done by Microsoft’s anti spyware package. Can I set a default to not be prompted to approve it’s actions (or other apps as well)?
Do you know of any place to get updated Creative sound drivers for Vista?
Where is the best public user group to try and post problems and get help?

  2. Thomas,

The firewall is going to undergo some serious changes between Beta 1 (which you are using) and Beta 2. In most cases, the behavior should be to ask you for approval once, and then never again for that app. This is the way third-party apps like ZoneAlarm have worked for some time. I’ll keep an eye on this.
No new sound drivers yet. The problem is that Vista is getting a new driver layer for sound apps, as I’ve written before, and until that layer is fixed all sound drivers are going to suck. It’s a little better in 5219, and should be much improved by Beta 2.
Don’t know the answer on that one. I have access to the private newsgroups and haven’t spent any time in the public groups. Anyone else have suggestions for Thomas?

  3. Good news for wireless connectivity. The D-Link DWL G122 windows XP driver WORKS in build 5231 if you download the drivers from http://www.d-link.ca

You MUST manually install the software from the setup.exe BEFORE attaching the G122 USB adapter though, or it won’t work. I’m typing this message about five minutes after getting this all to work. Now I just have to get my Radeon 7500 Mobility driver to install properly so I can enable Aero Glass..
