Your favorite backup software?

I’m working on the revision of Windows Security Inside Out and am currently researching backup software. You can help.

If you have a favorite backup program, leave a note in the Comments section here. Give me enough information to find the program, and tell me why you like the software you’ve chosen.

Thanks.

  1. I have a suggestion for some backup software you should avoid like the Plague. Veritas Backup Exec. Absolutely clumsy and horribly unintuitive interface, unnecessary resource hog, and some of the worst tech support I have encountered as an IT Engineer.

Make sure to investigate online backup services like xdrive and ibackup. I haven’t used them myself, but they sound attractive…

  2. For small shops NTBackup does a fine job.

You run into too many issues with the other stuff with patches etc. If you have full time IT person its on thing, but gads, why make like complicated..

Add a copy of Exed Software Undelte and use NTBackup and life is simple, it works and you don’t have to worry about the lateest and greatest patch at 3:00 AM when your trying to get the darn thing back on line.

  3. Genie Backup Manager is excellent (we use it at the office), but would you believe I use WinXP Backup Utility along with just simple WinRAR to backup my files? Both have proven to work and unlike zip-based backups, I’ve never had a RAR file go corrupt. Genie Backup Manager can be found at:

  4. I’m still searching! What I think is important is that the backup file not be in a proprietary format. ZIP seems to be the obvious choice; at least I won’t come upon an old backup in five years and find I don’t have software to open it!
