About six weeks ago, I warned you about Critical Update 811493 (see edbott.com: When an Update Needs an Update…). As promised, Microsoft has revised this patch to address the performance issues that were plaguing users of Windows XP Service Pack 1.
If you’ve been holding off on installing this patch, it’s safe to do so now. You’ll find it on Windows Update.
I just installed the patch about 2days ago and now my computer is at a crawl. Are you sure the patch has been fixed? It does not seem like it.
My opinion is stick to the first version if it works for you or do not install the patch at all if both versions are unsuitable.
The patch has been out for about two weeks now and I haven’t heard any other reports of similar problems. Do you by any chance have Diskeeper installed?
I instaled 811493 today 6/22/03 and it looks like the slowdown problem with it has been fixed.
I do have diskeeper installed and did remove the update because of slowing down my machine…can u tell me what diskeeper has to do with it??
Aha! I think that’s the problem. I noticed that the problems went away when I disabled the Diskeeper “Set It and Forget It” feature. I would say the security patch is much more important than background defragging. I can manually defrag once a month.
When I get a breather, I’ll report this to Microsoft and Executive Software.
What’s the current status of this problem? I took 811493 3 different times in the last 2 months, and every time had to go back and remove it. Including once before I even got Diskkeeper. I have all other updates in place and they’re doing fine,so far,but the crashes caused by 811943 were so bad,I’m still afraid to re-install that one,or recommend it to people writing in to me. What do you think? Go for it once more? Almost had to do a complete re-install last time!
Meant almost had to do a complete reinstall of my XP pro, lol. Left that unfinished. Sorry, lol.
Patch #811493 is NOT fixed – not for my PC. I just reinstalled Windows (twice). I didn’t know about the broken patch the first time – I just couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my PC, and out of frustration, I reinstalled Windows. Then I went out and installed SP1. Then I went out and installed the rest of the patches, and my computer went right back to crawling. I figured that it must have been the patches. So I re-re-installed Windows, and then reinstalled ONLY THE SERVICE PACK. It, without being asked to, ALSO installed this patch again, and of course the patch slowed my machine back down to a crawl. And there’s no “Remove” button when you try to get rid of it.
See my comments above. I’ve installed Windows on a half-dozen PCs lately, and SP1 does not install this patch. Not sure why you’re seeing this. Anyway, the Web was overrun with comments of this evil patch when the first version was out. I have heard no other complaints about the second version. Are you using Diskeeper? I noticed that Diskeeper doesn’t play well with the revised patch, but that’s a DK problem…
