Someone please help me understand this. AMD and Streamload have teamed up to offer AMD LIVE! Media Vault, which promises free online storage of 25GB of data. Or you can pay from $4.95 to $29.95 a month and up the quota to as much as 1000GB.
A terabyte of offline storage? Sounds great, right? Except…
Downloads per month, even for the premium plans, are limited to 10 percent of your total storage capacity. So if you actually pay $10 a month for the Elite plan and use all of the 250GB of storage they allow you to back up your data, and then your hard disk crashes, you get to restore your backed-up files 25GB at a time over 10 months? Huh? That rattling sound you hear is my brain pan hitting the inside of my skull. (It’s even worse if you use the 25GB free storage space, where you’re limited to 1GB of downloads per month, meraning it will take you more than two years to restore a backup.)
Oh, and the promotional copy says: “AMD LIVE! Media Vault handles all of your online backup needs. Never worry about your files again. … Get safe, secure, and private online backup for all your files. … After you upload files, they are easy-to-access, organized, and automatically backed up.”
But the terms and conditions of use say: “Streamload shall have no responsibility for and does not guarantee the integrity of Private Content or Public Content residing on Streamload’s equipment. You are responsible for independent backup of Private Content and Public Content stored using Streamload’s services.”
And don’t get me started on the parts where these clowns say they’ll rat you out to anyone they damn well feel like if you store something there they don’t like:
Streamload may monitor Your access, use, Public Content, files and/or Private Content to detect signs of misuse. Streamload will not knowingly tolerate the use of its services for illegal or other injurious or damaging activities. If Streamload believes, in its own discretion, that You may be connected with such activities, Streamload may disclose its user files, the Public Content and/or Private Content to the proper authorities.
These guys win my award for Worst Online Service in the World.
And there’s this tidbit:
“Free account holders cannot download any file greater than 25 MB. Note: you may upload Transfer a file from your computer to your Streamload account. and store files greater than 25 MB to test our service, but you will not be able to download these files until you purchase a paid subscription.”
It’s not a vault, it’s a Hotel California for files.
It’s really the “Here’s my Wallet Award”
All your file are belong to us…
As a former subscriber to Streamload.com (4 year customer), I can say with experience that it’s all smoke and mirrors – sounds good but in actual use it’s a disaster. The service (MediaMax) is currently in shambles and has been since mid-August. To see how bad it was and is (to a lesser extent now) visit their blog – http://blog.streamload.com – and begin with the August 23rd posts and comments.
I used it primarily for backups and only in a very limited sense because uploading took forever at 15kbs on average. And even then you were lucky if the upload finished. Downloads were worse. They were faster (as expected) but anything over several MBs would invariably crash and you were left with starting all over again. All of this was when the service was working optimally.
I recommend that anyone considering online storage to stay as far away from Streamload/MediaMax as possible. Don’t get sucked in with their smoke and mirrors – you’ll be sorry.
Also his amd live media vault sucks! I’m using an Athlon AMD computer, and the application crashes on every run. The’re firing on the toe…
I’ve tried to store 100 GB of my files, music and videos at an online storage provide like Flipdrive and Mediamax. Does it really work during day-to-day usuage? How much does it cost? Can it replace your local harddrive(s)? Check out my report at my blog if you’re interested.
buridan gets it rignt on. It is all smoke and mirrors at Streamload. Either they are a scam or they are running this bussiness on the cheap!! I strongly suggest people contact the Better Business Bureau online. I have been in contact with one of their reps in San Diego for months now. Although nothing may happen in my complaint against StreamLoad, I will note that a BBB compaint I made against another internet scam company was answered by a call from a District Attorney…they were after the company and wanted to know if I could help!!
Oops…and I almost forgot…I got some money back from the scam company!! 🙂 Use BBB!
