OK, Amazon has pre-order prices and a ship date – January 30, 2007 – for Windows Vista. Details over at Ed Bott’s Microsoft Report on ZDNet.
But I think this price list, courtesy of a Slashdot commenter, might be more accurate:
- Windows Vista Ultimate 1 leg 1 arm
- Windows Vista Business 1 leg 1 ear
- Windows Vista Home Premium 1 arm 3 toes
- Windows Vista Home Basic 1 eye 1 ear (you won’t be getting Aero anyway)
- Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade 1 arm 4 toes
- Windows Vista Business Upgrade 1 arm
- Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade 1 ear 3 toes 2 fingers
- Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade 1 eye
All prices include your soul.
I just want to know whether my soul has to be activated first.
Now I understand why Microsoft has put the accessibility icon on the log-on screen
i hate those high prices, it makes me downloading and using cracked copies.
LOL to Microsoft! Your OS costs more than a PC and this is in fact stupid.
Why cant MS sell Windows with lower prices ?!? Its such an economical pain to buy Windows and i know dozens of people who don’t buy it because of the price.
Bah…
Bottom line — took years to get XP to behave the way I want it to. It does what I want, supports my word processing, etc. To me the OS is no more than the water/tank that the fish (apps) swim in. Now the real point: Regardless of how well done Vista might be, isn’t releasing any new version of Windows, a relic of medieval programming which promises a thousand new problems to battle with each “new” release, no more than polishing a turd? Why subject yourself to this? Why? Why, Ed? LOL
The prices are too high, and are going to compel users to use cracked software. I live in an emerging economy, and a price of $199 for the Windows Vista Home Basic Edition is hardly affordable for people like me. I wish someone built a more user friendly Linux!
The work behind Windows Vista has been HUGE (5 years). Microsoft payed and is still paying around 200 programmers (excluding digital artists and beta testers) for their work… What if you are NOT payed for your work?
If you don’t know how much work has been done, don’t talk! An operating system is a very big piece of software and bugs are inside by default.
At least Microsoft is coerent and doesn’t rely on some open-source community as MacOS X (built on Darwin) and RedHat (Fedora Core) or SuSE (openSuSE). After all, every operating system has its own bugs (including linux and BSD). The only things that keeps “hackers” away from those operating systems is the fact that they’re NOT made by Microsoft and not because they’re REALLY safe!
I realise that alot of work goes into an operating system and there are lots of people to pay, but sell the OS for a little less and you sell more OS’s. A steep price means more pirating. More pirating means less sold. Less sold means higher prices down the line. Could be worse though. Could be a high end 3d app, or music app where you are talking thousands of dollars.
I don’t think its unfair for us to buy the vista on its current cost, because i believe that we ALL have “needs” that “cannot” be satisfied – for life… And this needs are the ones that make us “want” what is NEW to us. Windows Vista is made because of the ever growing technology, and that means – the lame opinion of others is NOT important… And those who has the keen mind…are the ones who benefit from what is MADE for THEM – and that is – Windows Vista ULTIMATE!
Linux is still free, still works great
