Back in May, I passed along word that Microsoft was planning to call the Vista version of its new browser IE7+.
Never mind.
Microsoft has reconsidered that decision. Tony Chor, Group Program Manager, says:
Well, the feedback we got on the blog was overwhelming – many of you didn’t like it. So, as we’ve said on our website, we heard you. I’m pleased to announce that we’re switching the name back to “Internet Explorer 7”. No plus. No dot x. Just “Internet Explorer 7”.
Of course, this is Microsoft we’re talking about, so the official names are ridiculously overcomplicated. The official full names are:
- For Windows XP: “Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP”
- For Windows Vista: “Windows Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista”
I’m just going to call it IE7.
I’m looking forward to the release of Windows Live Windows Internet Windows Explorer Live for Windows Live Windows Vista. I’m fairly certain there’s a few more places the words Windows and Windows Live can be inserted…
This is good news, I would hate to have to explain to people why it was called “+”.
Microsoft has this preposterous aversion to revision numbers and clear naming conventions. I don’t know if it’s deliberate obscurity or just the inane compulsion to be different.
sorry Serdar, but what could be more clearer than “Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP” its pretty clear that its not Internet Explorer 6 (or 5 or 4….) and as clear as a sunny sunday morning that it is for WINDOWS XP. I can understand that if you are the cover boy for Moron Monthly or can’t read you may find it unclear but come on just string the words together to form a sentence.
