Icons that look like nothing

Raymond Chen explains why the designers of Windows Vista “have to be careful … to make sure [icons] don’t actually look like anything.”

It sounds like a Seinfeld routine, but it’s a legitimate point. As they say, go read the whole thing.

  1. Oh what a world SCO, RIAA, Apple, Adobe, the Patent Office, and armies have created. When everything is commoditized, then everything is liable.

  2. Hah!

How about an ad-supported free Windows where the My Computer icon looks like a Dell and the C: drive looks like Coca Cola? These companies shouldn’t be mad, it’s free product placement!

  3. Hi, Ed Bott.

Why doesn't Microsoft take some suggestions from some of the customers who are dedicated Windows users? I think this would not only help them along, but they could make this a tradition, for future releases of Windows products, thus making it more for the consumer too. Just have them submit anonymous surveys, or fill out there ideas in on maybe different blogs? This way no one can say "who is copying who." Just a suggestion, you may want to pass along to the Microsoft Team, thank you.
