As part of a consulting project, I’ve been going through old issues of PC Computing from 1992 through 2000. Here’s my column picture from July 1993:

Here’s a different shot, from the June 1995 issue:

I think I look younger now, without the beard.
It’s been fascinating to revisit the period before the launch of Windows 95 and compare it to the buzz around Windows Vista. More thoughts on that topic later.
Update: Just found this ad in the May 1998 issue. Look familiar?

That’s definitely not me.
Ah yes….the Zip drive. One of the “Yugos” of technology. Remember the infamous “click of death”?
I loved the Zip drive. I do not remember them being as flakey as I’ve read about on the web. Regardless, their time has passed. We’re having a garage sale this summer, and I’ve put two drives and a couple dozen discs in the “sell” pile. We’ll see if I get any takers. What’s the going rate for the external 100MB drive? 250MB? Discs? I’m thinking that $20 can take it all…
So, you should re-do your masthead on the site and use a shot of you masking your face with a bunch of DVD-RW’s. In 5 years, we’ll look back and think the same things we’re thinking today about the 1990’s shots.
I definitely remember the picture of you with the floppies. In fact, I found the image so engaging and full of whimsy that it’s what drew me to your column.
How would you do that photo if it were taken today? CDs? Nah. Thumb drives!!!!
Thumb drives? I’d be afraid of looking like Freddy Krueger!
