NewsGator has had some hiccups today (acknowledged on their forum), so I fired up Bloglines for the first time in a few months. It seems to be faster than I remember from last year. Guess the long-awaited datacenter move is complete.
More than 400 people subscribe to this site in Bloglines. Are you happy with the service lately?
Much improved. I don’t recall exactly when things improved, but for the last couple of weeks things have been great – no more slooooooooooowdowns. 🙂
Much better since the datacenter move (which they posted a surprising amount of detail about.)
Updates to most blogs are shockingly fast – I’ll often make a post on one of my sites or a comment on someone else’s, and see my post or comment show up in Bloglines 5-10 minutes later.
All in all I’m very happy with Bloglines lately!
Sometime around when Bloglines did their upgrade, they broke their reading of WordPress 1.5x feeds (or at least some of them — a bunch that I run). Details here.
Yes it has improved. A while back they were out for 8-12 hours as they did the move and almost immediately after coming back online, things were much faster and the performance continues. I notice my RSS feed gets updated within minutes, as opposed to hours, sometimes days on the old system.
There’s something strange happening with my left frame auto-refresh since the datacenter move. It’s refreshing all right but it’s not normal (ack, can’t explain it). Will grab a screenshot the next time it happens.
Oh, and welcome back. I missed your blog. Hope all went well with the family situation.

Here’s how it displays on auto-refresh:

And when I click on a link, the feed opens in the left frame instead of how it’s normally done. See: http://static.flickr.com/42/93340915_0a35b5df31.jpg?v=0
Pretty strange and only started after the datacenter move.

It’s working just fine for me. I still have some bugs that I need to get reported, I’ll probably have to do some screen shots to actually show them what’s happening. I load up a folder, and it says that I have 10 new items on this site, 20 new items on that site, but it doesn’t show anything. Clicking collapse and expand does nada, and it only happens like once a week. And that’s uaually with one of my big folders (Politics), although I’ve seen it happen with others.
Some sites have been slow to actually be updated (Ain’t It Cool News), which just as I was going to send a note about it, started updating again.
There are still some bobbles that need to be worked out, but it’s getting there.
Ryan, I don’t know your operating system and browser (I don’t see any Folder’s in your “good” left hand display, but then, I use the heck out of folders), but I’ve never seen that issue.
Windows Server 2003 and Firefox 1.5 here.
OK, I tried to pull up your feeds (you have them marked private! For shame! 😛 ), but I see you are using folders. I’ve just never seen Bloglines look like that before.
I would try it under <strike>Foxpro</strike> Firefox just to see if it’s any different. And if it is, I’d report that bug pronto, making sure to report everything, OS version and browser version.
My public feeds are at http://www.bloglines.com/public/bytehead/
😛 😀
WinXP SP2 with Firefox.
Bloglines has been really good recently. I never really noticed much of a problem before their move/upgrade but enough people complained for me to believe there was an issue.
It’s still definitely the best aggregator option, as far as I’m concerned, even though it’s far from perfect.
Bloglines – much improved…its my most used site now…122 feeds
As a fairly new user to Bloglines, I missed the time you all refer to when it was supposedly slow to respond. I’ve never found any real problem with it.
Recently I set up a Newsgator account since everybody seemed to be raving about it. I found the user interface far harder to use, requiring more clicks for simple actions (like migrating my feeds across). I love the way I now have a button in my Links bar marked “Sub with Bloglines” which digs out the feed from a website and subscribes straightaway. I don’t like the way everything in Newsgator is image-dependent and clumsy to use.
I too have found Bloglines much improved – I’ve been using it since just after its inception, and yes, for a while, it sucked with slow overheads, and terrible lag between updates (just as you mentioned) – as it is, since the data centre move, things are much faster, and feeds are refreshing (mostly) much better – some feeds up to every half hour (My last.fm feed often shows me the current tune I’m listening to!).
There have been a few people complaining of problems – Russel Beatie posted a blog under the title of: “Who do I have to [expletive deleted] at Bloglines to get my feed updated”, but lo-and behold, things improved a mere two days later.
In short – the service seems to be getting better to me – and hey, they’re still free 😀

I have been using Bloglines for about a month now and have not experienced any problems. Does the job for me.
I use both Bloglines and Newsgator, depending on which one seems to be behaving better at any given time, and lately I’ve been happier with Bloglines. They’ve improved considerably, while Newsgator has been giving me a lot of timeout errors and “document contains no data” errors lately.
Yep…I am MORE than pleased with your feed (and the rest) on Bloglines. Couldn’t function without it!
Bloglines is great and I enjoy reading your Windows Expertise because I almost always learn something interesting. Good job!
I’m a convert from Newsgator to OmeaReader … love it so far!! Take a peek … curious what you think …
