Office to open XML formats

Well, this is interesting. Microsoft is Standardizing the Microsoft Office Open XML formats. Brian Jones of the Office team says:

We are going to bring the Microsoft Office Open XML formats to a standards body with the intention of eventually making the formats an ISO standard.

This sounds like a pretty definitive response to the Massachusetts-based anti-Microsoft gang.

  1. Actually, it sounds more like a response to a requirement from a government body – far too many are requiring standards based software these days.

Ed, do you know anyone who does their spreadsheeting in emacs? No, neither do I.

  2. Yeah, Microsoft is a TAD late on the whole web application, standards-based, RSS’ish type of integration. It’s good to see steps like this in the right direction. I just hate it when they spin this type of stuff as “innovation” and what not.
