My one and only baseball post of the year

When I was a kid, I was a huge baseball fan, practically obsessed with the sport. The 1994 strike drove me away, and when I came back, I didn’t have anywhere near the same passion.

Except when it comes to the Yankees. I’ll root against the damn Yankees anytime, anywhere. (Unless they’re playing the Dodgers, in which case I unplug the TV and don’t open the sports section.)

Watching the Yankees lose is even sweeter when they get close enough to win and pull up short. It’s happened over and over again in the past few years (last year’s collapse against the Red Sox was the stuff that dreams are made of), but it never gets any less sweet.

So, thank you, Angels! Here’s hoping you go all the way.

Update: Oh, and I am really delighted that Gary Sheffield and Bubba Crosby were unhurt in this crash, because I don’t have to feel any guilt over whooping and hollering at the sheer comic opera of this little pas de deux.

And one more thing … if you want to talk about unlikely names, isn’t Bubba Crosby at the very top of the list? Just sayin’.

  1. I have to agree with you completely, Ed. Admittedly, I hate the Yankees with a passion–I am still angered by Jeffrey Maier’s interference in the ALCS of 1996 against my beloved Orioles. I also was not saddened by the ousting of the Red Sox. I like nothing more than seeing the obnoxious fans of both franchises silenced in their quest for postseason glory.

Of course, I have to disagree with you on rooting for the Angels. Their city name–Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim–is bad enough. I am pulling for the Cardinals this year–best team in baseball this year.

  2. I have to be an anti-yankees person as well, if only because I’m from Boston (though I’ve only ever attended one game in the green monster).

There are so many reasons to hate the yankees.

    don

  3. Being a psychotically obsessed Angels fan, it was pretty gratifying watching the game last night. Although I have turned my wife into a baseball and Angels fan, I feel bad for her, having to put up with me eating dinner on the couch and not giving her as much attention as I should while I watch the games. And, just as my team beats the Yankees, and I think I can finally relax, the next series starts tonight! So, here we go again.

    GO ANGELS!

  4. I was a big fan until the strike of 94 as well. I was flying to Atlanta to visit friends and bought some Braves tickets, only to have to accept a refund due to the strike. I ended up buying tickets to an NFL pre-season game with the Falcons and have been an NFL fan since.

  5. I have always been amazed at the sick attitudes that the Yankees bring out in people. What prompts such pointless nastyness? It’s a game people. Let’s keep the hate out of it.

  6. i have to agree with baseball fan.. why dont you just root for your team and enjoy the game instead of hating a team SO much just because they are such a well known dynasty. relax its a game enjoy it.. and dont hate yankee fans.. at least they aren’t band wagoners and have been fans through thick and thin
