Office 2003 Service Pack 2 is out

If you subscribe to Microsoft Update, this should show up automatically in the next few days, but you can download it here:

Office 2003 Service Pack 2

The most interesting change is the addition of a new Phishing Protection feature to the Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter. If you have Office 2003 SP2 and the latest Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update, this feature will be turned on by default. I’ll get a screen shot and more details after I’ve had a chance to look at it.

  1. I tried twice from the Microsoft update site and the installation failed both times with a non-informative error message. I went to the Microsoft Office site download area and downloaded the larger of the two files that were listed there and the installation worked fine. The larger file is for those who have trouble with the update site and also for those who don’t have their original Office disk available.

This morning I clicked on a link in an email from American Power Conversion (APC) in the preview pane in Outlook and was told it was a suspicious link and had been turned off and that if I wanted to turn the link on I needed to click in the “Infobar.” I have to admit I didn’t know what the Infobar was. I searched Office help and found out that links are blocked in two ways: If the message is sent to the Junk mail folder by the junk mail filter you can turn the links on by moving the message back to the Inbox. But will also block links in messages that are in the Inbox if the links look suspicous. In order to unblock those you need to open the message in the Infobar is located at the top of the message and clicking on it gives you the option to unblock links and if you want you can add the sender to the safe sender’s list.

I think the APC message looked suspicous to Outlook since it contained an IP address–that’s fine with me, better safe than sorry.

  2. I’m sorry in my comment above The line about unblock links in messages in the Inbox should read: In order to unblock those you need to open the message ‘and’ the Infobar is located at the top of the message…

  3. Yeah, having the same problem as you Frank – when trying to download it from Microsoft Updates it downloads and apparently installs (I always use the ‘Custom Install’ option) – but then promptly comes up with it again in the “Updates are ready for your computer” box!
