Netscape 8 breaks IE

This would be funny if it weren’t so ironic. OK, it’s funny.

We’ve just confirmed an issue that has started to be reported on newsgroups and forums that after installing Netscape 8 the XML rendering capabilities of Internet Explorer no longer work.

To paraphrase the old Microsoft-bashing line: “Netscape ain’t done till IE won’t run.”

The problem, apparently, is that the new Netscape actually writes a bunch of Registry entries under the Internet Explorer key.

This, of course, is the same browser that required a patch for three major security issues on the same day it was released. Nice work, AOL!

Worst. Software. Ever.

  1. I saw hints where some Firefox folks were guffawing at Netscape’s 8.0 problems. After purchasing WinAmp, AOL promptly “upgraded” it to disable saving streaming video unless accompanied by the appropriate DRM certificate.

  2. Alright, honestly now… Let’s ignore the security flaws and these problems with it breaking IE for a moment.

Have you actually used Netscape 8? I downloaded and installed it the day it came out, but I don’t actually use it on a day-to-day basis. You have to admit even from a theoretical standpoint that it’s pretty amazing. Both Firefox and IE rendering engines, as well as the ability to configure security settings (Javascript, etc.) and popup blocking on a per-tab basis. That’s pretty impressive if you ask me.

It doesn’t really matter if the developed anything of their own, it’s the fact that they have (for the most part) successfully tied all the ends and pieces together.

If this is their new direction, I’d love to see Netscape make a screaming comeback…

  3. Chris, you kind of answer your own question there.

In other words, Netscape 8 is like a dancing elephant. Who cares that it can’t dance all that well. It’s amazing that they can even get that pink tutu wrapped around that huge waist!

Uh, no, let’s not. I have had years of experience with Netscape’s incompetence and arrogance. This is just more of the same old stuff.

    None for me, thanks.
