A reader alerts me that he got an e-mail from Microsoft telling him his Windows Security Update CD (ordered last month) is on the way. Have you received yours yet?
While it’s a good idea, the implementation has a real problem, because it only includes patches through October 23rd of last year. Why doesn’t Microsoft make a monthly disk containing all current Service Packs and patches? That disk could then be available as a downloadable ISO image file that can be burned to a CD? I’d gladly burn 10 copies and give them to every technically unsophisticated Windows user I know.
You only know 10 unsophisticated Windows users? Ed, you are indeed a lucky man!
Having said that, I agree. With such monthly burns I would even be willing to provide copies to just about anyone I know, who would not normally patch their machine. It’s amazing how many people can’t figure out how to change their font in Notepad, but manage to turn off their Automatic Update.
I have an even better idea. Microsoft should include monthly CDs with lost windows patches on milk cartons!
Given how long the beta process for the Windows Security Update CD seemed to take, I wouldnt count on getting one out every month! Of course, you can alreay install network admin updates and manually compile a cd every month for those who dont seem to care about the security issues!
