Your dirty PC

From the aptly named Techdirt comes this story: Your Computer Is 400 Times Dirtier Than Your Toilet Seat.

“…your telephone, computer keyboard and mouse probably have 400 times the germs as your toilet seat. The thing is, people wash toilet seats… but they tend not to do much to clean or disinfect the things they keep their hands touching all day, every day.”

Eeeeewwww.

  1. It’s a habit of mine to wash my hands before working on anyone else’s computer (for their protection) and again when I’m finished (for mine). Also, those little alcohol napkins are an essential part of my toolkit when abusing someone else’s computer.

So how do I get this stuff that looks like a dark wool suit out from under the keys on my keyboard?

I tried taking the keys off a hopelessly filthy keyboard, The keys went in a pillow case and into the washing machine. Then I cleaned the keyboard subface. After the keys went back on, they never did work quite the same again. They were difficult to press and didn’t always bounce back as they should. Is there some lubricant that should go on the keys?

Sort of makes a good case for using those $6 cheapie boards at the office superstores and pitching them every six months or so, eh?
